Reinventing E-Mobility Together with Volocopter

Elevating Innovation: How ARTS Group Helped Propel Volocopter’s Vision for Urban E-Mobility

In the ever-evolving landscape of e-mobility, Volocopter emerged as a trailblazer in urban air transportation. Founded in 2011, the German startup sought to redefine mobility with its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles. While the company faced financial challenges that led to insolvency in December 2024, its groundbreaking vision continues under new ownership by Diamond Aircraft Industries, a subsidiary of Wanfeng Aircraft Division.

Between 2020 and 2024, ARTS Group proudly partnered with Volocopter, contributing Manufacturing Engineering Services and Temporary Workforce Solutions to support the development of the VoloDrone—a pivotal project in Volocopter’s innovative portfolio.

The VoloDrone: A Milestone in Cargo Mobility

Amid Volocopter’s ambitious goals to revolutionize urban transportation, the VoloDrone stood as a beacon of innovation. This all-electric heavy-lift utility drone was designed to transport up to 200 kg of cargo, leveraging 18 electric rotors powered by lithium-ion batteries. Versatility was at the heart of the VoloDrone’s design, enabling it to deliver packages to remote locations and provide support in areas where ground vehicles struggled.

Although the VoloDrone’s development was ultimately impacted by Volocopter’s financial difficulties, ARTS Group’s contributions to its prototyping phase remain a testament to the power of collaboration and technical expertise.

ARTS Group’s Role in the VoloDrone Project

During this groundbreaking project, ARTS Group supported Volocopter in several critical areas, applying both technical and workforce expertise to drive progress:

Temporary Workforce Solutions:

ARTS Group provided specialized personnel who worked directly on the VoloDrone prototype at Volocopter’s facilities, including:

  • A team lead mechanic, whose exceptional performance led to a permanent position at Volocopter.
  • Two mechanics skilled in precision assembly.
  • A work preparation specialist focused on operational planning.
  • A quality inspector ensuring compliance with exacting aerospace standards.
  • An electrical technician supporting the development of electronic systems.

Wire Harness Assembly Expertise:

Our team contributed specialized knowledge in wire harness assembly, including cable crimping and ensuring precise cable lengths. This expertise ensured the reliability and efficiency of the VoloDrone’s electronic systems during prototyping.

Facility Set-Up and Infrastructure:

ARTS Group played a key role in designing and setting up the production hall for the VoloDrone, ensuring the workspace was optimized for prototype development.

Through these efforts, ARTS Group enabled Volocopter to focus on its core mission while reducing process costs and increasing operational efficiency.

A Legacy of Innovation and Collaboration

Prototype development is inherently dynamic, requiring agility, creativity, and collaboration. At Volocopter, this process was marked by a free-flowing exchange of knowledge among an internationally diverse team, all united by the shared goal of developing innovative eVTOL solutions.

While Volocopter ultimately faced financial hurdles that halted its independent operations, the impact of its projects—such as the VoloDrone and VoloCity—will continue under the stewardship of Diamond Aircraft Industries.
